Central Maryland Martial Arts uses a 10 Gup system of rank promotion starting with 10th Gup at White Belt and progressing through the other belt ranks until 1st Gup at Brown Belt / Black Stripe, Cho Dan Bo, Black Belt candidate. Students progress through the ranks according to the syllabus for each level and by virtue of successfully passing rank examinations. All even-number gup ranks require formal examinations while odd numbered Gup promotions are typically held informally during regular class at the instructor discretion, with the exception of 1st Gup. Distinction is made between Youth students and Adult students with the latter being considered higher in rank than any Youth student regardless of rank. Please refer to the “ Youth to Adult Student Transition Policy “ in this manual. While it is theoretically possible to progress faster, an average student usually achieves 1st Degree Black in about 4 or 4-1/2 years. The following section of the Student Manual breaks down in detail the requirements for each belt level including the minimum time in grade at each level.
